Birkrigg Common KWL

Birkrigg Common KWL #4 Race Report

We had our fingers crossed for a better day weather-wise than back in 2020 (I’m told it was extremely wet, wild & windy!) and thankfully we got it. Conditions were pretty good underfoot on Sunday on Birkrigg Common.

An impressive 18 juniors ran on Sunday, the majority of them taking part in the first race of the day. It was wonderful to see a sea of 13 green vests within the running pack of 68 racers!
The U11/13 race started with a stampede across the common followed by a runnable climb up to the turn at the trig point, then a long sloping descent before turning back down a steep incline on to the common for a sprint finish. The U15 race was similar but longer and had an additional loop once the trig point was reached.

U15 Girls

Lucy had an amazing run yet again this week, she looked powerful as she raced up the hill and had lots of energy left to zoom down again and sprint back to the finish.

U15 Boys
Jack – 1st
Robbie – 9th
Mack – 19th
Charlie – 23rd
Jack looked focused and strong as he approached the trig point, then gained a good lead as he returned down the course to finish with another impressive win. Robbie had an excellent run looking confident and determined throughout. Mack’s sprint finishes are awesome to watch, he easily overtook an Ambleside runner on the last stretch (there had been quite a significant gap between the two of them coming down the hill) and looked really strong as he crossed the line. Charlie looked to be enjoying his race as he confidently ran back down the slope towards the finish.

Well done to everyone who took part on Sunday, you gave it your all and the way in which you supported and encouraged your fellow athletes was heartening to watch! 💚🏃🏃‍♀️
The next KWL race is Barbon on 13th February. Looking at the course description, this is a steep one!

Whitestones KWL

Whitestone KWL #3 (23rd Jan 2022) Race Report
14 juniors raced this week on the out and back fell course at Whitestone. Fast starts, a single track course and terrain perfect for speedy descents. We’ll start with the girls this week and their excellent results…
U11 Girls 🌟
1st Mia
2nd Lucy
These two showed their experience from the BOFRA races of last year on their well-paced ascents and sure-footed, smooth descents. Their consistent Tuesday training sessions alongside family runs are really paying off. Super running girls!
U13 Girls 🌟
3rd Francesca
Francesca is another athlete who rarely misses training and she is improving with every race. This result should be a great boost to her confidence, well done Francesca.
U15 Girls 🌟
2nd Lucy
14th Isabella
A great day for the Bagot girls! Lucy followed her sister’s high placing with a 2nd place and an impressive show of her strength and speed. Isabella also had a terrific run in her 2nd KWL, putting in practice all the skills from the quarry hill training sessions. Brilliant running you two.
U11 Boys 🌟
8th Stanley
12th William
There was a bit of argy bargy at the start of the U11/U13 race as 52 sprinted out to get a good position on the single track. Stanley took a tumble but was straight back up and running. This was the first real fell race for these two, as opposed to cross country, and they really embraced it, flying down and sprinting along the finish straight, awesome!
U13 Boys 🌟
6th Ben
10th Carl
11th Ewan
This is a highly competitive category with the biggest field of runners. Ben came absolutely flying downhill, closely followed by Carl and Ewan. These three train together and push each other on in every session and race. Well done boys, what a talented bunch!
U15 Boys 🌟
1st Jack
11th Robbie
15th Mack
18th Charlie
It’s so good to see that we still have strength in numbers as we move up into the smaller, older age categories. Jack led the way with another commanding run. The speed at which all of these runners whizzed past on the downhill was quite a sight! Confident, balanced, determined running from everyone, nice one boys!

Giggleswick KWL

The Giggleswick Kendal Winter League took place on the 16th January 2022.

27 Settle Harriers out of a field of 117 Juniors 👕👊🤩🏃‍♀️🏃

We’ll start with the oldest this week and Dougie, not strictly still a junior, but running his first race in the Seniors. He came a magnificent second in an outstanding field which included international athletes. Well done Dougie!

U21/Seniors
2nd Dougie
In the U15 Girls race it was fantastic to see Bella joining Lucy and both of them having excellent runs. These two have been in the oldest training group for a full term now and the gradual increase in training intensity is showing in their strength and endurance.
U15 Girls
3rd Lucy
10th Isabella
There was a win for Jack in the U15 Boys! Even though we’ve become so used to Jack crossing the line in first place, each one of these victories deserves to be celebrated as it’s not easy to maintain that level of focus and fitness week after week, and sometimes on consecutive days. Well done Jack! Robbie had a terrific run to finish 5th while Mack and Charlie looked relaxed and confident in this new age category. Finn, we hope you recover swiftly from your injury.
U15 Boys
1st Jack
5th Robbie
14th Mack
19th Charlie
In the U13 Girls Annabel, Mabel and Francesca went off at a well-judged pace, maintained their positions well and all finished with a sprint, showing their brilliant running form. The drills are paying off!
U13 Girls
3rd Annabel
8th Francesca
10th Mabel
It was all change this week in the U13 Boys race with Ben taking the highest spot for the harriers. The boys in this age group are so evenly matched that it’s always so close depending on the terrain, hills and distance, where they all have different strengths. Thomas had a confidence boosting run to finish just behind Ben, Ewan a second behind and strong finishes from Carl and Ed, it was certainly exciting to be at the home straight!
U13 Boys
4th Ben
5th Thomas
6th Ewan
12th Carl
15th Edward
There were lots of newcomers in the U11 Girls race and their enthusiasm in the warm up, excitement on the start line and determination during the race were a joy to watch. They were unphased by the hills, the mud and the stream crossing…in fact they embraced them all! Super work Lucy, Mia, Edie, Amelie, Edie, Bethany and Anya. Mia, it was great to see you back smiling at training tonight.
U11 Girls
5th Lucy
16th Edie H
17th Amelie
18th Edie A
19th Bethany
20th Anya
And finally, our stars in the U11 Boys. Led by experienced athlete James they all ran superbly. Stanley built on last week’s run and looked great and Christopher, also in only his second fell race, ran brilliantly. Toby did a spectacular sprint finish and always looks as though he’s enjoying it! I was especially proud of William who returned to the start line this week and ran with spot-on pace judgement and courage.
U11 Boys
7th James
13th Stanley
15th Toby
18th William
19th Christopher

Scout Scar Kendal Winter League

A record 17 hardy harriers juniors lined up at Scout Scar for the 1st Kendal Winter League Race on Sunday 9th January.
🏃
There were 64 runners in the U11/U13 race, and it was a fast and furious uphill start! Our 11 athletes had excellent, well-paced, fast finishing runs with everyone giving 100%. It was the first time in a KWL for 8-year olds Stanley and William, congratulations you two for giving it your best! It was also great to see Thomas racing for the harriers for the first time. Mia and Lucy placed very highly in the U11 girls and looked as though they were enjoying it! James and Harry made up the rest of the boys U11 team with determined runs. Ewan, Ben, Francesca and Carl had a great interclub race with their positions switching throughout, right through to the sprint finish!
🏃‍♂️
The U15 had a slightly calmer start with a field of 39 athletes. Jack followed up his Yorkshire silver medal place with an impressive win! Lucy placed highly up the field with a strong run, while Robbie, Mack and Charlie also had great starts to their racing years. Both the uphill endurance and the downhill skill was evident in all our runners.

Charlotte was our representative in the U17s and totally nailed it to come in 1st! This was also after racing the previous day at the Yorkshire Championships 👏👏

Bradwell – FRA Junior Championships (Race 3)

Our Super Summer for Settle Juniors continued on Saturday 10th July with 4 athletes travelling to Bradwell in the sunny Peak District ☀️🏅🏃‍♀️🏃🏃🏃

Longer and more challenging than our regular BOFRA races but Carl, Mack, Charlotte and Jack all rose to the challenge magnificently. Our athletes looked confident, relaxed and generally awesome in the company of some of the best young fell runners in the country 🙌👊🤩

The exciting news of the day was that Jack became the English Junior U15 Fell Running Champion!! Another runaway win today (by a whopping 52secs) and with one race of the series to go, he can’t be reached! Testimony to hard work, consistent training and a great attitude, very well done Jack 👏👏👏

Kirkby Gala BOFRA races

A big well done to our 5 representatives at the Kirkby Gala BOFRA races last Saturday ! 👏

Unfortunately there was no actual gala this year due to Covid rules and the courses had to be re-routed slightly but it was great that the races were still able to go ahead on new courses.

We had 3 runners in the U12s. Carl was 13th (10:59), Ewan close behind in 14th (11:03) and James 17th in 11:47. Great running boys ! This was James and Ewan’s first races of the season.

In the U14 boys,  Jack continued his tremendous form with yet another victory !!🥇 (in 12:03) ! This was Jack’s 4th race win a row – a massive achievement – congratulations Jack !

In the U14 girls, Lucy had an excellent run too, finishing 4th in 15:49 🏃‍♀

This fixture was race number 6 in our Club Junior Championships. The current scores can be viewed here

As you will see, Jack leads the boys championship with Carl in 2nd and Dougie 3rd. Annabel leads the girls with Charlotte and Lucy 2nd and 3rd. There are 10 races remaining. Bradwell (FRA Champs) is next on 10th July with Cracoe BOFRA on 18th July.

Hawkswick Dash BOFRA Races

Another wonderful turn out from the Harriers Juniors 0n Sun 20th June at Hawkswick with 16 athletes taking part out of a huge overall field of 158 junior athletes.

We would have had even more as Mia, Francesca and Mabel were all due to race but unfortunately have had to isolate due to school covid cases. We missed you girls! Annabel held the fort though in the U12 girls race and came in an impressive 13th, looking strong as always, well done Annabel!

The U9s race was an all boys event for Settle with Robert (4th), Calum (7th), Toby (12th) in his first fell race and Finlay (19th) making it look easy on those super tough climbs and descents. Brilliant efforts boys!

Back to the U12s and another smashing turn out for the boys. Ben returned to racing with a storming run to finish 13th with Mack (19th), Carl (22nd), Henry (37th) and Harry (39th) following closely behind.

Lucy and Charlotte took on the U14s girls race with great determination, they really gave it their all and finished very high up in the field as 6th and 7th girl respectively.

In the boys equivalent Settle had their first impressive win of the day with Jack continuing his winning streak. He was closely followed by Ned (8th) and Oliver (15th) who was making a welcome return to racing.

Finally, we were treated to an awesome second win when Dougie sprinted in with a 30sec lead over the rest of the field in the U17 race.

WELL DONE to all our fell runners, you’re all superstars!

Up-the-Nab Fell Races (FRA Junior Championships 2)

8 of our juniors made the long journey to the Up-the-Nab races in Derbyshire on Sun 13th June.  This event was the 2nd fixture of the FRA Junior Championships.  It also incorporated the Inter-Counties Fell Championships, with selected athletes representing their Counties (as well as their clubs).

Many congratulations to Jack who, representing Yorkshire became the Under 15 Inter Counties Fell Running Champion !👏👏 A fantastic result for Jack and in addition to his individual title, he also led Yorkshire home to win the team title .  By winning the race emphatically, he also established himself firmly as the front-runner in the FRA Under 15 Championships for 2021.

As well as Jacks’ exploits, there were excellent runs too from all our contingent of 8 runners 👍👍 . I gather the courses were really tough and the races much longer than usual (especially the Under 15s !) Well done Everyone !! 👏👏
