Congratulations to the 28 juniors that took part in the KWL at Giggleswick on Sunday 12th January (club junior champs race 2).  I hope they all enjoyed it.   We had 25 running in the junior races plus three 17year olds in the senior race.  Despite the exceptionally muddy and wet conditions, our juniors ran brilliantly & gave their all !  The results, some pictures and Jess’s report can be found here Giggleswick Kendal Winter League  and lots more pictures can be found on the Settle Harriers Facebook page.

Jess’s report of the 1st fixture can be found here Scout Scar Kendal Winter League

The next 2 Kendal Winter league fixtures are………..

Sun 19th Jan – Whitestone, Staveley-in-Cartmel.

This is one of the steeper ones for juniors & involves rather a slippery, rocky descent.  Probably not recommended for novices or those not confident on descents – but fine for those with some fell race experience.  This fixture won’t be a counter for our club championships.

Sun 26th Jan – Birkrigg Common, near Ulverston (Junior Club Championships race 3)

This is a very popular fixture with our juniors.  A stunning venue with impressive sea views and great runnable courses.  It’s well worth the extra travelling time.  This fixture will count towards our Junior Club Championships.

Details for both of these fixtures can be found here on the Helm Hill website.  As with all fixtures, the junior races start at 12 noon.

Settle Harriers Junior training resumed on Tuesday 7th January and it was great to see everyone back in action after the Christmas break.

We had 12 juniors competing in the 1st Kendal Winter League fixture on Sun 5th Jan at Scout Scar which was fantastic.  Great also to see 3 juniors making their racing debuts for Settle Harriers !  This was also the first race in our 2020 Junior Club Championships.  Have a read of Jess’s race report and look at the results here

1. KENDAL WINTER LEAGUE AT GIGGLESWICK ON SUNDAY (12th January)

We hope that as many juniors as possible will take part in Sunday’s KWL fixture at Giggleswick – which also counts towards our Junior Club Championships for 2020.

Junior races start at 12 Noon and registration will be at Catterall Pavilion.  best to arrive by 11.00am or so to ensure parking etc. THOSE JUNIORS THAT RACED YESTERDAY AT SCOUT SCAR SHOULD BRING THEIR RACE NUMBERS – BUT THEY STILL NEED TO REGISTER AT CATTERALL & PAY THEIR £1 ENTRY FEE.

If your child’s details haven’t already been registered online, you can do so on the Helm Hill website & this will save time when you register on the day.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT JUNIORS MUST CARRY A WATERPROOF TOP, HAT & GLOVES IN THEIR RACE.  THEY SHOULD ALSO WEAR THEIR CLUB VEST (if they don’t have one yet, we will bring some along to registration tomorrow).
Well done to the 25 juniors that came along to the Christmas Cracker Relays on Tuesday 17th December.  It was great to see our juniors enjoying themselves and showing such ability,  enthusiasm and good sportsmanship .

This was the last junior training session of this term.  Junior training will resume on Tuesday 7th January.

Training fees for 2020 will be due by 7th January as will annual membership subscriptions.  I will email parents about this after Christmas.

The 2020 Kendal Winter League commences on Sunday the 5th January at Scout Scar and we hope that, once again, lots of our juniors will take part.  More details can be found here

FINALLY !

Finally, I’d like to wish all our juniors and their parents and families a very Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Best wishes,

Andy Evans

Congratulations Settle Harriers Juniors!!  Awards for the 2019 Junior Club Championships were handed out at the Junior’s Presentation Evening on Tuesday 3rd December held after junior training in Eshtons Pavilion.

What a talented and enthusiastic bunch!  39 juniors took part in Championship races this year, and we celebrated their success after training.  All those that took part received sweets and chocolates.  Those that did 3 races or more also received a fantastic Settle Harriers beanie.  The top 6 boys and girls also received a beautiful engraved medal presented by club Chairman, Mark Wildsmith.  Many thanks to Alex and Kerry for providing these excellent prizes.

Many thanks to our coaching team and everyone involved with running our junior section over the last year.  Many thanks also to parents for supporting the club and finally many thanks to all the juniors for their dedication and fantastic attitude.

Well done to our 2019 champions, Lucy and Carl, and to everyone that took part in the championships in 2019.  The final scores can be viewed here Junior Championship Table 2019

Some pictures are below (thanks to Jess) and more can be viewed on the Settle Harriers facebook page.

The next ParkRun meet-up for both junior and senior members is scheduled for Saturday 7th December. The venue is confirmed as Skipton.  It would be great to see lots of juniors and seniors taking part there.  The first meet-up was great fun and tea and cakes in the leisure centre cafe afterwards was excellent !  For more information about our ParkRun initiative, see here

On Tuesday, 3rd December we will be presenting awards for the 2019 Junior Club Championships. Training for ALL GROUPS will be from Eshtons  and will finish a little earlier on this date (6.30pm) and we hope that all juniors and parents will then gather in Eshtons Pavilion for the awards.  Any junior that took part in one race or more will receive something, with special  awards going to those that took part in 3 or more races and trophies/medals to the top 6 boys and girls in the Championships.  We will also be talking about next year’s Junior Club Championships and other racing opportunities in 2020.

Settle Harriers’ first ParkRun meet-up was a great success with 17 club members (or parents of junior members) taking part in the Skipton ParkRun (5k) on Saturday 9th November.

Conditions were good if a little cold before the start and the 4 lap course on tarmac paths within Aireville Park was dry.  We had 8 juniors and 9 seniors taking part and the age range of our party was from 7 years old to 60 !

There were lots of highlights with 4 of our contingent running PBs for this course and 7 making their 1st appearances in a ParkRun.

Jack Sanderson (age 11) was 1st Harrier home in an amazing 5th place overall in a field of over 200 runners.  Jack also knocked no less than 74 seconds off his 5k PB. Well done to Jack and to all our junior contingent (Oliver, Carl, Ben, Ned, Charlotte, Robert & Mabel).

(Jack running at Curly Wurly races Oct 2019)

It was great to see Julia Murfin on the comeback trail after a long battle to recover after her skiing accident and subsequent surgery. Carol was our first senior runner home (3rd female hoem) followed by myself, Jan, Marc, Rachel, Karen, Julia & Rebecca (running with Mabel)  Unfortunately John Eddington had to retire before the finish with a calf/achilles injury.

We hope to try and have a club ParkRun meet-up once every month and the next date and venue will be announced soon.

Settle Harriers had no less than 10 of our juniors running in these finals at Dalby Forest on Tuesday 5th November.  Many congratulations to everyone that ran – great performances from all !

Have a read of Jess Baganall’s report here

Settle Harriers has decided to trial a “ParkRun” initiative – particularly aimed at those aged 11 and above, but also open to younger juniors and adults too.

In addition to Junior Club Championship & other fell races, its proposed that the club has a presence in some of the very popular and low key ParkRuns that exist in this area.

The idea is to have a club presence at a Park Run event once every month, with a member of our coaching staff there to meet club members and show them the salient points of the course etc. They may well take part themselves or be on the sidelines cheering on and offering encouragement. There are 8 different ParkRuns within an hour’s drive from Settle and we hope to visit each of these over a period of time.

Settle Harriers will be kicking off this initiative at Skipton ParkRun on Saturday 9th November (run starts at 9.00am in Aireville Park, Skipton).

We do hope that older juniors (and perhaps some younger ones and parents too) will be able to come along and give this a go – it should be a good morning and a chance for our junior and senior members to come together at an event.

Just a few points to remember…….

– Skipton ParkRun is all on tarmac – so wear road shoes/trainers rather than fell shoes.
– ParkRuns are open to seniors and juniors – but see note below
– younger juniors (under 11) can take part but under ParkRun rules they must be closely accompanied on the run by an adult
– Carol and Andy will be at Aireville Park near the finish line from 8.30am – so look out for us there and we can all do a spot of warming up and course recceing before the start
– do wear Settle Harriers vests in the run (good for advertising the club and you will get more support as you run round)
– you need to register for ParkRun & print off a barcode if you have not already done so – the link is https://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/  Make sure to bring your barcode on the day – you will need to present it at the end of your run
– details of Skipton ParkRun including course map, parking info etc is here https://www.parkrun.org.uk/skipton/course/
– after the event, you may want to join us for a tea/coffee in the Leisure Centre cafe
– any questions, just email me

Hope to see lots of you there !

Please note that there will be NO break in junior training sessions for half-term – so there will be sessions on the 22nd and 29th of October and right through until we break for the Christmas holidays.  The last session of term will be on Tuesday 17th December.

Juniors in school years 6 and above will need to bring headtorches with immediate effect – due to the dark evenings.  They should also wear some reflective clothing.  Younger juniors will be training on the floodlit astro pitch – so will not need headtorches.
