Kettlewell BOFRA races

The Kettlewell BOFRA results from Sunday  6th June are now out. It looks like another fantastic day for our juniors !

We had 14 running in total including 2 new members, Calum and Finlay – very well done to them ! I have done a summary of the Settle Harriers performances at the foot of this post.

Once again we had a race winner ! This time it was Dougie who stormed home to win the Under 17 race – a brilliant run and well deserved result !

High finishes too for Ned, Lucy, Charlotte and Calum.

Massive congratulations to everyone that run !

Best wishes,

Coniston Gullies BOFRA races – Sun 23rd May

Coniston Gullies Race Report

We had a record turnout for the first race back. It was even commented upon that Settle Harriers had a large contingent! Well done to everyone who turned up, put themselves on the start line and gave their all. After the last 12 months, it was a very brave thing to do…no one knew what it would feel like to race again, never mind take on one of the toughest BOFRA courses!

U9s
Dedication to the return to regular training paid off for Teddy and Nala Brearley who finished 5th boy and 10th girl in their first fell races. Sarah had posted some pre-race pics, and they definitely win the award for Race Day excitement! Also making their fell running debut were Calum (3rd) and Finlay (7th), running as unattached runners on Sunday but hopefully in green vests soon! Awesome running everyone.

U12s Girls
Four of our athletes in this race. The girls looked so strong on the climb and then flew downhill! Again, it was clear to see the hard work from training paying off. Annabel finished 6th, Francesca 14th, Mia, in her first season as an U12 and her first run for Settle Harriers, finished 17th and Mabel was 19th. Majestic running all round!

U12s Boys
A few less harriers than expected in this race, and it was left to Carl and Mack to represent the Harriers. They did a brilliant job, committed themselves so well on the uphill, sure footed on the downhill and then both managed a sprint finish! So impressive to watch with Mack finishing 9th and Carl 16th.

U14s
Usually a smaller group of athletes but not this year with many of our Harriers moving up an age group. It’s fantastic to see them all still wanting to race and enjoying it (well, maybe not on the uphill!). We had some remarkable results with Jack finishing 2nd, Charlotte 4th girl, Ned 7th, Lucy 8th girl, Robbie 11th and Finn 14th. Wow! We have so much strength and potential in all our age groups. A wonderful start to the racing year and so much to look forward to!

Resumption of Junior Training on Tuesday 13th April

We hope all our juniors and their parents enjoyed the Easter holidays !

Under current government legislation and England Athletics guidelines, we are allowed to resume group training as long as we operate in a “covid secure environment”.

The latter involves us having a Covid-19 action plan and risk assessments to help minimise risks of Covid-19 infection to athletes, coaches, parents & the general public.

We already have the above from when we resumed in September, but we will be re-visiting these to see if they need further refinements.

You may want to have a look at these documents – just click on the links below

From 13th April, please note the following in particular………..

  • our base from 13th April will be Settle College Playing Fields (behind the swimming pool)

–      we won’t have access to any indoor area including toilets

  • we may have to impose a limit on the number of juniors we can cater for, at least to start with.  We will decide this after we know how many children wish to attend.
  • it will not be possible for juniors to attend training without our prior agreement
  • as in September, we hope to run 4 groups – subject to availability of coaches and assistants.
  • juniors will be allocated a training group and coach before the 1st session and on arrival they will report direct to that coach
  • there will no mixing of the 4 groups
  • we will expect juniors to be even better behaved than in normal circumstances (!) and to listen carefully to instructions
  • juniors, coaches and parents will need to be socially distanced (ie 2 metres+ apart) both before, during and after the session
  • training sessions will be modified to try and ensure that juniors stay 2m + apart
  • we will be asking parents to make drop-off and pick-up of children as speedy a process as possible.  Please do not linger for a chat with other parents etc – as this may look to others like a “social gathering”.
  • as in September, parents of all children wishing to attend will have to complete a “pre-activity health questionnaire” for their child before the first session and agree to us passing on contact details to NHS Track and Trace service if requested.
  • juniors must not attend training if they have possible Covid-19 symptoms or have tested positive for Covid-19 or if they have been instructed to “isolate”
  • if government guidance changes or if local restrictions are imposed, we may  have to suspend training sessions again. We will monitor the Covid-19 situation & guidance closely

Races for Juniors

Subject to the Covid-19 situation, it is likely that races for juniors will be held this summer in some form.  Opportunities may be limited at first but by June-July some of our favourite fixtures should hopefully be returning.  I will try and keep you up-to-date but if your child is desperate to race again, keep an eye on the FRA & BOFRA websites and other online sources.  Once the situation is clearer, we will look at options for having some sort of Junior Club Championships this year.

Annual Subscriptions and Training Fees

The club will NOT be charging the annual £35 junior training fees this year (due to all the cancelled sessions last year and this year).  The club’s Committee recently went further and decided that junior club membership this year is FREE (normally £10).  I am aware however that a few parents have paid their child’s 2021 membership fee already.  To ease the admin on this, we would be grateful if parents this applies to could either treat the payment as a “credit” against next year’s membership or as a donation which the club will pass on the CRO – our local mountain rescue service.  If parents in this situation could let me know their preferred  option, I will pass this on to our Treasurer to process.

Resumption of Junior Training on 8th September

I hope all our juniors and their parents are enjoying their summer holidays despite the current difficult circumstances.

It was great to see so many juniors taking part in the two rounds of the Rainbow Relays (thanks to Jess for organising this) and also good to see several juniors running a 1, 2 or 3 mile challenge (the challenge is still open by the way).

However, the main point of this communication is to give you some good news – we are hoping to resume Junior Training sessions on Tuesday 8th September !

Under current government legislation and England Athletics guidelines, we are allowed to resume group training as long as we operate in a “covid secure environment”.

The latter involves us undertaking a covid action plan and risk assessments to help minimise risks of Covid infection to athletes, coaches, parents & the general public.

There will inevitably have to be some changes in the way we operate from 8th September as you will gather from these documents.  In particular………..

  • our base from 8th September until the 20th October will be Settle College Playing Fields (behind the swimming pool). Giggleswick School are currently not accepting outside bookings
  • we won’t have access to any indoor area including toilets
  • we may have to impose a limit on the number of juniors we can cater for.  We will decide this after we know how many children wish to attend (parents have been emailed to obtain this information.
  • it will not be possible for juniors to attend training without our prior agreement
  • we hope to run 4 groups subject to availability of coaches and assistants.
Please do not linger for a chat with other parents etc – as this may look to others like a “social gathering”
  • parents of all children wishing to attend will have to complete the “pre-activity health questionnaire” for their child before the first session and agree to us passing on contact details to NHS Track and Trace service if requested
  • if government guidelines change or local restrictions are applied, we may of course have to suspend training again. We will monitor the Covid situation closely.

Because of all these extra complications and the need to possibly limit numbers, we need to know as soon as possible (and by 1st September at the latest) whether your child WOULD OR WOULD NOT like to  take part in junior training from Tuesday 8th September until 20th October (session time 5.45pm until 6.45m as before).  I have emailed all parents to request this information.  If you have not received this communication, please get in touch with me.

Best wishes,

Settle Harriers Juniors – Rainbow Relay & 1/2/3 Mile Challenge

Until “normal” junior training sessions and races are resumed, Settle Harriers have been offering other activities and challenges to keep our juniors interested in running and connected to the club.

39 juniors and parents have now joined the new Facebook page.  Any junior/parent/club member  who hasn’t, can do so by following this link www.facebook.com/groups/672014466979397/

and requesting to join.

Rainbow Relay 🌈🌈🏃‍♂‍🏃‍♂‍

Really well done to all those juniors that took part in the first round of the Rainbow Relay 👍👏 and many thanks to parents for making it happen and for your supportive comments and “likes”.

A special thanks also to Jess for getting the Relay off the ground and coordinating everything.

Some stats from Round 1……

26 juniors ran a leg
111 miles were covered – equivalent to over 4 marathons or the distance from London to Birmingham !
Elevation for these runs was 17,650 feet. This is somewhere between the heights of Mont Blanc (15,700ft) and Kilimanjaro (19,000 ft)

The 2nd round of the Relay will start in a couple of weeks’ time. In the meantime, it would be great if juniors can have an attempt at the Challenge below ……..

1/2/3 Mile Challenge 🏃‍♂‍🏃‍♂‍

The idea is that juniors challenge themselves by running a measured 1, 2 or 3 mile course of their own choice. There are no races going on at the moment so this is the closest we can get ! The Challenge will be kept open at least until “real” races start up again.

Three juniors have already taken part in this Challenge. Seb Segger-Staveley has posted a very fast time for 2 miles on the road and Finn Durkin and Mack Bagnall took on an uphill mountain mile in Kingsdale. See the Facebook Group for more details.

Details of each 1,2 or 3 mile performance we are notified of will be recorded on the Junior Website  here so juniors will be able to monitor their progress when they repeat challenges etc

Key points of the challenge are

• parents/juniors will need to devise a 1, 2 or 3 mile course which should be measured accurately using a tracking device (eg garmin watch, Strava or other i-phone app)
• please ensure the course is safe for your child with no danger from traffic & no trespassing on private land etc.
• the course can be circular, multi-lap or point-to point and on any terrain (but if on road, see note above re traffic). Please make sure the course isn’t significantly “net downhill” (ie finish at lower altitude than start)
• juniors can run their course whenever they like. Once they have done so, please post the details on the junior facebook page quoting “1/2/3 Mile Challenge” We will need to know

o child’s name
o age
o distance run (1m, 2m or 3m)
o elapsed time
o amount of ascent/descent (if possible)
o route description or map (eg from strava)
o photos and brief reports would be great

• if any juniors choose a very hilly route (eg up a fell), they will be rewarded with “King of the Mountains” points !
• I’d recommend that juniors attempt the 1 mile challenge first. That will probably be far enough for our youngest ones. Older ones may later want to try the 2 or 3 mile challenge too.
• juniors can have as many attempts as they like at the challenge and try to improve their personal bests. Please post the details of each attempt and I will keep a record on our junior website so they can track their progress
• leave a gap after each challenge to allow time for recovery. I’d advise no more than 1 challenge per week (or 2 at most)
We’re looking forward to seeing the results coming in !!

And finally………….

I hope juniors enjoy taking part in these challenges and hopefully I’ll be able to give you some positive news about junior training resuming before not too long.

Best wishes,

Andy Evans

Important Notice regarding Coronavirus

With regret, we are going to have to cancel Settle Harriers junior training with effect from Tuesday 17th March.
This is a result of the new government guidelines issued on the 16th which advise against “non essential contact with others” and “unnecessary travel”.
The Fell Runners Association and England Athletics have also advised that club training nights, races and other club events  should not be held for the time being.
We will of course contact parents when it is considered “safe” to resume sessions again.

Helm Hill have now announced that the remaining Kendal Winter League fixtures have been cancelled.
The Kettlewell FRA Junior Championships fixture on Sat 28th March has also been cancelled.

It’s probably safe to assume that unfortunately there will no more races until the government’s guidelines are eased.

Keep safe and best wishes,

Junior Club Championship Races – Updated 16th March

The finalised Junior Club Championship fixture list can now be seen/downloaded at https://settleharriers.org/juniors-under-21s/junior-championship/

For those interested in the BOFRA series, their fixture list can now be viewed here  http://bofra.org.uk/racecalendar/

Details of forthcoming Junior Championships races are below.  Please check race websites regularly though as the list of fixtures cancelled due to coronavirus concerns is getting longer every day….

– The next KWL is next Sunday (22nd March) at Elterwater Common (in Langdale).  This one, held in a spectacular location, will be a counter for our Junior Club Championships.

– On the following weekend there are 2 fixtures that will count towards our championship – so juniors have a choice or they some may even opt for both !

Sat 28th March – FRA Junior Championships (Race 1) at Kettlewell.  The FRA Junior Champs races usually have larger fields than KWL races and the standard is higher at the front end of the fields.  So a good test for those of our juniors with high aspirations.  Kettlewell offers a testing course (but not quite as steep as the BOFRA races at Kettlewell later in the year).  Details at https://www.harrogate-harriers.co.uk/races/kettlewell-kaper

Sun 29 March – Helm Hill KWL.  This is the last scoring KWL of the season – so last chance for juniors to get in their 4 races or improve their league positions.  The courses are hilly but runnable – mainly on grassy tracks.

All the KWL information can be found at  http://www.helmhill.co.uk/ including location details & course maps. Please remember the rules about juniors carrying kit at each fixture (waterproof top, hat & gloves)

Please note that, after the 3 cancellations, juniors finishing 4 KWLs or more will receive a special medal and award from the League in April.

March News Update

KENDAL WINTER LEAGUE & JUNIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

After 3 cancelled fixtures, the KWL resumed on the 1st March at Cunswick and 11 of our juniors took part.  See Jess’s report here Cunswick Kendal Winter League  This fixture was a counter towards our Junior Club Championships (fixture number 4).

The next KWL fixture is on Sunday (8th March)  at Cautley Spout.  This one won’t count towards our junior club championships.  It is one of the steeper ones, probably not ideal for novices.

The next one after that is on Sunday 22nd March at Elterwater Common (in Langdale).  This one, held in a spectacular location, will be a counter for our Junior club championships.

All the KWL information can be found at  http://www.helmhill.co.uk/ including location details & course maps. Please remember the rules about juniors carrying kit at each fixture (waterproof top, hat & gloves)

Remember also that any juniors finishing 5 KWLs or more will receive a special medal and award from the League in April. This number is likely to be reduced due to the 3 recent cancellations.
