Settle Hills Race

What better way to spend Father’s Day running around the beautiful hills above Settle?!

The Settle Hills race has always been held on Father’s Day, which this year is the 16th June 2024.  Please note, the start time has changed to 11:00am.

The race starts in Settle Market Place – a few minutes walk from the Settle rugby club where registration takes place and where the race finishes is located.

This is a stunning course in the Yorkshire Dales, offering magnificent views of the limestone outcrops and caves of Attermire Scar, after a challenging climb out of the historic market town of Settle. In 2013 the race hosted the Inter-Counties Championship, bringing runners from all over the UK.

This year refreshments will be available from  local supplier Forage and Feast, offering teas, coffees and tasty artisan food for sale. Local physiotherapist Dave Bryant will also be on hand to give free post-race massages.

Please Note: No dogs are to accompany runners during the race; to do so may damage relationships with the landowners on which this race relies.

Rules:
The race is run under FRA rules, therefore:

All runners must read the principles of fell running and the requirements for runners, including the recent rule changes.

These documents include details of the full FRA mandatory minimum kit that you must bring on the day.

FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit:
Waterproof whole body cover (with taped seams and integrated attached hood), hat, gloves, map of the route, compass, whistle and emergency food.

There will be checks! The race organiser may change to this rule on the day if the weather is glorious, of course. It is also strongly recommended that runners carry some water – especially if the weather is hot.

If you retire, you MUST report back to race control at the finish on the rugby pitch. Please ensure you do this, as nobody wants to spend hours out hunting for people who are already enjoying a nice hot bath at home!

Entry:
Enter online via SI Entries to secure your place. £8 FRA members/£10 non-members.
Entry on the day if the race limit has not been reached, £10 FRA members/£12 non-members,

Registration:
Race registration, opens at 9:30am and will be upstairs in the North Ribblesdale Rugby Club (Settle).

Terrain:
The race has a bit of everything – grassy paths, tarmac at the beginning and end, rocky paths, tussocky moorland, and it includes some steep climbs and descents. The terrain is very uneven in places. The biggest descent is off High Hill towards the end, and there is a water and first aid station at the bottom of this hill at the road crossing.

Prize Giving:
This will take place as soon as our competence permits on the Rugby Pitch.

Car Parking:
There is a car park next to the Rugby Club, this is operated by Craven District Council and so there is a cost to park your car.

Directions:
From the south, come into Settle off the A65 roundabout, under the railway bridge, turn right at the Falcon Manor Hotel and follow the road down and round to the car park and rugby club.

From the north, come through Settle, past the Peugeot garage on the left, down the hill, turn left at the Falcon Manor Hotel and follow the road down and round to the car park and rugby club.

Facilities:
There’s lots for the family to do whilst the race is on – Settle town centre is a short walk away and for those making a weekend of it, there is plenty of accommodation locally – details of attractions and places to stay from Settle Tourist Information Centre (Tel: 01729 825192).

Toilets:
These are available in the Rugby Club.

Accommodation:
There are a number of campsites around Settle, and there is YHA in Ingleton, along with numerous Bed & Breakfast places locally.

Finally:
Good luck and enjoy the race!
