The Cracoe BOFRA races were held on Sunday 18th July in very hot weather.  Despite missing a number of our regulars as they were self-isolating, we still had an impressive 10 athletes taking part.  This event was also the 8th fixture out of 15 in our club’s Junior Championships for 2021.

There was another strong run from Dougie, finishing 6th in the U17s in the scorching heat and a hard fought win for Jack in the U14s.  Really well done boys!

We had a huge contingent in the U12 with Annabel, Ewan, Ethan, Mack, James and Carl all representing the Harriers and running magnificently. The photos say it all…our athletes race with such determination.

In the U9s, Lucy and Amelie made their fell race debuts – amazing ! The first of many.

Despite many of our team still having to isolate, to have athletes in all age groups is so impressive. Settle Harriers Juniors are going from strength to strength. Well done to everyone – I hope you’ve all cooled off!

Our Super Summer for Settle Juniors continued on Saturday 10th July with 4 athletes travelling to Bradwell in the sunny Peak District ☀️🏅🏃‍♀️🏃🏃🏃

Longer and more challenging than our regular BOFRA races but Carl, Mack, Charlotte and Jack all rose to the challenge magnificently. Our athletes looked confident, relaxed and generally awesome in the company of some of the best young fell runners in the country 🙌👊🤩

The exciting news of the day was that Jack became the English Junior U15 Fell Running Champion!! Another runaway win today (by a whopping 52secs) and with one race of the series to go, he can’t be reached! Testimony to hard work, consistent training and a great attitude, very well done Jack 👏👏👏

A big well done to our 5 representatives at the Kirkby Gala BOFRA races last Saturday ! 👏

Unfortunately there was no actual gala this year due to Covid rules and the courses had to be re-routed slightly but it was great that the races were still able to go ahead on new courses.

We had 3 runners in the U12s. Carl was 13th (10:59), Ewan close behind in 14th (11:03) and James 17th in 11:47. Great running boys ! This was James and Ewan’s first races of the season.

In the U14 boys,  Jack continued his tremendous form with yet another victory !!🥇 (in 12:03) ! This was Jack’s 4th race win a row – a massive achievement – congratulations Jack !

In the U14 girls, Lucy had an excellent run too, finishing 4th in 15:49 🏃‍♀

This fixture was race number 6 in our Club Junior Championships. The current scores can be viewed here

As you will see, Jack leads the boys championship with Carl in 2nd and Dougie 3rd. Annabel leads the girls with Charlotte and Lucy 2nd and 3rd. There are 10 races remaining. Bradwell (FRA Champs) is next on 10th July with Cracoe BOFRA on 18th July.

Another wonderful turn out from the Harriers Juniors 0n Sun 20th June at Hawkswick with 16 athletes taking part out of a huge overall field of 158 junior athletes.

We would have had even more as Mia, Francesca and Mabel were all due to race but unfortunately have had to isolate due to school covid cases. We missed you girls! Annabel held the fort though in the U12 girls race and came in an impressive 13th, looking strong as always, well done Annabel!

The U9s race was an all boys event for Settle with Robert (4th), Calum (7th), Toby (12th) in his first fell race and Finlay (19th) making it look easy on those super tough climbs and descents. Brilliant efforts boys!

Back to the U12s and another smashing turn out for the boys. Ben returned to racing with a storming run to finish 13th with Mack (19th), Carl (22nd), Henry (37th) and Harry (39th) following closely behind.

Lucy and Charlotte took on the U14s girls race with great determination, they really gave it their all and finished very high up in the field as 6th and 7th girl respectively.

In the boys equivalent Settle had their first impressive win of the day with Jack continuing his winning streak. He was closely followed by Ned (8th) and Oliver (15th) who was making a welcome return to racing.

Finally, we were treated to an awesome second win when Dougie sprinted in with a 30sec lead over the rest of the field in the U17 race.

WELL DONE to all our fell runners, you’re all superstars!

8 of our juniors made the long journey to the Up-the-Nab races in Derbyshire on Sun 13th June.  This event was the 2nd fixture of the FRA Junior Championships.  It also incorporated the Inter-Counties Fell Championships, with selected athletes representing their Counties (as well as their clubs).

Many congratulations to Jack who, representing Yorkshire became the Under 15 Inter Counties Fell Running Champion !👏👏 A fantastic result for Jack and in addition to his individual title, he also led Yorkshire home to win the team title .  By winning the race emphatically, he also established himself firmly as the front-runner in the FRA Under 15 Championships for 2021.

As well as Jacks’ exploits, there were excellent runs too from all our contingent of 8 runners 👍👍 . I gather the courses were really tough and the races much longer than usual (especially the Under 15s !) Well done Everyone !! 👏👏

Coniston Gullies Race Report

We had a record turnout for the first race back. It was even commented upon that Settle Harriers had a large contingent! Well done to everyone who turned up, put themselves on the start line and gave their all. After the last 12 months, it was a very brave thing to do…no one knew what it would feel like to race again, never mind take on one of the toughest BOFRA courses!

U9s
Dedication to the return to regular training paid off for Teddy and Nala Brearley who finished 5th boy and 10th girl in their first fell races. Sarah had posted some pre-race pics, and they definitely win the award for Race Day excitement! Also making their fell running debut were Calum (3rd) and Finlay (7th), running as unattached runners on Sunday but hopefully in green vests soon! Awesome running everyone.

U12s Girls
Four of our athletes in this race. The girls looked so strong on the climb and then flew downhill! Again, it was clear to see the hard work from training paying off. Annabel finished 6th, Francesca 14th, Mia, in her first season as an U12 and her first run for Settle Harriers, finished 17th and Mabel was 19th. Majestic running all round!

U12s Boys
A few less harriers than expected in this race, and it was left to Carl and Mack to represent the Harriers. They did a brilliant job, committed themselves so well on the uphill, sure footed on the downhill and then both managed a sprint finish! So impressive to watch with Mack finishing 9th and Carl 16th.

U14s
Usually a smaller group of athletes but not this year with many of our Harriers moving up an age group. It’s fantastic to see them all still wanting to race and enjoying it (well, maybe not on the uphill!). We had some remarkable results with Jack finishing 2nd, Charlotte 4th girl, Ned 7th, Lucy 8th girl, Robbie 11th and Finn 14th. Wow! We have so much strength and potential in all our age groups. A wonderful start to the racing year and so much to look forward to!

Congratulations to Seb and Dougie Segger-Staveley who represented North Yorkshire in the English Schools Cross-Country Championships in Liverpool on Saturday 14th March. Seb finished 67th in the Senior Boys race & Dougie 146th in the Junior Boys. Congratulations to them both for their runs and on their excellent cross-country seasons ! We also had at least 2 juniors (Jack Sanderson and Annabel Hinds) selected to represent their county schools teams in the Primary Schools and Year 7 National Schools Cross Country Championships due to held on the 20th March in Loughborough. Unfortunately this event has now been cancelled – but well done to Jack & Annabel (and any others) on their selections.

Earlier news: Congratulations to Seb Segger-Staveley who represented Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships held at Loughborough on the 7th March. Seb continued his excellent season by finishing 20th in the Under 17 Boys race. Seb was the first Yorkshire runner home.

Congratulations also to all those that run in the Cautley Spout KWL fixture on the 8th March. Looking at the results we had a big turnout of juniors and some excellent performances, including 2nd places for Charlotte & Jack, 4th places for Lucy and Annabel and a 6th for Karl.

We had a dry day at last, hurray!! Conditions were chilly and windy but good underfoot for this long course. Well done to the 11 juniors who braved the weather and all put in marvellous performances. The races got off to a very prompt midday start and all the U11s and U13s ran together in the first race. This gives a wonderful, huge field and also means that the age range is from 8-12, making pace judgment tricky. Our runners are really learning to run at a pace that works for them and it’s showing in each race. They were all amazing to watch, running with such determination.

A special mention this week goes to James Skeldon who ran in his first Winter League race and I’m sure had a smile on his face throughout, something we can all aspire to! Also well done to Ned Whittaker, our representative in the longer, tough U15 race and Annabel Hinds who finished 3rd in the U11 girls race.  Some photos are posted at the foot of this page – more are on the Settle Harriers Facebook page.
